Car Insurance UK

Average car insurance costs rise above £1,000

Drivers look set for a nasty shock when they renew their car insurance this year, after premiums recorded their biggest ever increase during the last three months of last year.
According to the latest AA British Insurance Premium Index published today, the average insurance quote for those shopping around for a renewal rose by a wallet-busting 11% between September and December.
Overall, the average quoted comprehensive premium rose by 7.2%, sending it through the £1,000 a year barrier for the first time.
The quarterly index shows that the average "shoparound" premium – based on the three lowest quotes for a customer, which most closely resembles what buyers actually pay – accelerated steadily over the year, adding more than 22% to the typical comprehensive quote over the past 12 months. It ended the year at £613.
The cost of third party, fire and theft policies, typically bought by young and newly-qualified drivers, rose by a third over the year, sending it even further out of reach of many young motorists.
The AA's findings underline the importance of shopping around when you get your annual renewal notice. The disparity between the average quoted premium and the cheapest prices paid by those looking for the best deal has risen to £387 a year for comprehensive cover.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said the increases were necessary because insurers had been paying out 20% more in claims than they had been collecting in premiums.
"Insurers have been reporting significant rises in personal injury claims. People now seem willing to pursue claims for minor injuries that in the past they wouldn't have bothered claiming for – all encouraged by personal injury claims lawyers," he said.
Douglas said the cost of meeting claims for accident damage had also been rising steadily, despite a fall in the number of accidents. "The spate of collisions during the recent wintry spells resulted in about 30% more claims than normal."
The AA's research shows the price rises are not evenly spread across the UK. The largest were in East Anglia, where motorists paid an average of 9.6% more in the last quarter of last year, while Wales saw the smallest increase at 5.7%.
Meanwhile, insurers have also seen fraud levels jump, adding £44 to every household's insurance cost. It is also estimated that uninsured drivers represent around one in 20 vehicles on Britain's roads, and claims involving such drivers added around £30 to every annual motor policy.
Adrian Webb, a spokesman for esure, said many consumers would be able to keep down the price they paid by looking around for better deals.
He added: "Unfortunately, there has been a surge in whiplash and small personal injury claims over recent years, despite there being less accidents.
"This inevitably pushes all insurers' premiums up and will affect drivers, while we battle to weed out spurious claimants and concentrate on paying only those who have genuinely suffered."
The AA warned that home insurance premiums were also on the rise. It said the average shoparound premium for combined buildings and contents cover rose by 9% last year.

Auto Insurance Tips

A growing number of people are dropping their auto insurance to try to save money, according to a recent study by the Insurance Research Council (IRC). If the current rate of unemployment continues, the IRC estimates that the national uninsured rate will climb from 13.8 percent in 2007 to 16.3 percent in 2010. With that many people driving without coverage, it's dangerous to be uninsured. But how much car insurance do you really need?
If you're like many people feeling the pinch, your inclination is to get the bare minimum of insurance coverage required by the law in your state. That's a good place to start, though those minimums may not fully protect you -- or your assets -- if you file a claim. We recommend getting more than the minimum coverage unless you are driving a beater and have no assets to protect.
Every state in the nation, except for New Hampshire and Wisconsin, requires that you have liability insurance, and that mandatory coverage varies according to state.
In the chart below, minimum liability limits are read as follows (in thousands of dollars):
  • Bodily injury liability for one person in an accident
  • Bodily injury liability for all people injured in an accident
  • Property damage liability for one accident

What occupations pay less for their car insurance?
Those who read such title will say what is the relation between what I do for living and my car insurance policy but, the truth is that there is a direct relation between cheap car insurance and personal occupation. There are numerous criteria for acquiring cheap car insurance and your occupation is one of the most important criteria that affect your premium.
Car insurance company is not a charity aiming to help those who are having hard times with their cars but, they are service companies that are offering a service against a profit. Their profit actually comes from those who pay the insurance and do not make accidents so, they tend to attract such people to sign insurance premiums with the company in order to make a higher profit. They tend to offer cheap car insurance policies for these people in order to keep them signed up with them for the longest possible period.
Car insurance company identifies a “safe driver” according to the following criteria: –
- Drives at a relatively low speed
- not in a great hurry
- not having a stressful occupation
- drives low mileage with his own car
- Uses the public transportation network or the company bus drives him to and from work.
When the driver is not in a stressful job then he will be less likely to use his cell phone while driving and even if he is using it, he would concentrate very much in the call and forget about driving. Being on the cell phone for a lot of time while driving makes the driver more prone to make an accident and that is completely against the “safe driver” definition of the insurance companies.
Let us browse through some occupations to give you an example for the less stressful jobs that may get cheap car insurance premiums. Scientists, lab technicians, writers, librarians and those who work in similar jobs are the most prominent examples for those who get the best deals on their car insurance. This is because they always work in a relaxed work environment with no much stress. These people always ride the public transportation and use their cars only occasionally and this also means less mileage covered by their cars. All of these reasons makes them the best drivers who are rarely involved in accidents.
On the other hand, there are other occupations that incur higher insurance premiums. This is because the insurance companies do not consider them “safe drivers” and this is also because of their occupations and what they do for living.
Marketing managers and marketing executives are on top of the list because they are always stressed with their marketing targets and they are also always on the phone while driving. They also drive for very long hours and cover very long distances with their own cars. Any other job that involves high stress levels like sales, marketing, on – call doctors and other similar jobs can keep the person over the phone for long times and insurance companies think that this is the first step you take towards an accident so, they always put you in the high risk square. Of course, no one in the company will tell you that you are having such high premium because of your occupation but, it goes without saying that if you are working in a less stressed job then you will be able to get cheap car insurance easier than those working in stressful jobs.
If you are one of those who work in the less stressful jobs then it would be a good idea to go through your insurance policy once more and talk to your agent to see if there is any chance to make it less or to get better rates on your next insurance premium or not. Most of the insurance companies apply these criteria on all applicants. After all, any business is looking for success opportunities and safe driver would be a very good investment for insurance company.
If you are one of those who fall in square two then you may want to check my next post to see how you can lower your insurance premium and enjoy nice cheap car insurance without quitting your job of course.

Quick Car Insurance

If you've owned a vehicle for any length of time, then you realize there's much more to owning a car than merely the original price you paid to buy it. The ticket price or negotiated price is really just the starting point for any automobile. You'll have interest to pay (if financed), long-term maintenance to consider, and of course, automobile insurance!
When buying any automobile, you can find out easily how much the insurance will cost you by doing a quick car insurance comparison before making a decision. You can easily do car insurance comparisons on multiple vehicles and with multiple providers online to obtain free quotes for each automobile. To conduct an auto insurance comparison online, you'll simply fill in some basic information about your driving history, the automobile itself, and any discounts you may be entitled to receive from the provider.
Some quote sites provide you with 10 to 20 quotes from various companies, and others may render up to 50 results. This can arm you with valuable information, giving insight into what you will actually have to pay for a particular automobile over the duration of ownership. If you find that one automobile is going to cost $1,300 per year in car insurance and another is going to cost $2,000 per year, then you can make an informed decision as to whether or not you really can afford the latter.
Seeing What the Insurer Sees
When comparing auto insurance online, you'll likely notice a fluctuation in insurance quotes no matter how similar two automobiles may seem. This happens because no two cars are really alike when you dig a little deeper. You must take the time to do some research to actually see what an insurance provider sees. Insurance providers see numbers and statistics. They consider how likely it is a person will be injured or killed while driving a certain make of automobile.
Let's look at some examples:
One four-door car might feature built-in cushioning in the doors for added protection in the event of a side impact. Another might not have this safety feature and, therefore, is considered to be a risk for drivers and passengers in terms of safety. One car might be able to withstand a head-on collision better than another. One car might have airbags for both the driver and front passenger while another only has an airbag for the driver. Do your homework and study statistics on the automobiles you are considering for purchase. You'll not only increase the level of safety for you and your family, but also possibly find an automobile with very reasonable insurance rates!
Insurance providers also consider the type of vehicle, such as sports car, four-door sedan, two-door car, truck, SUV, mini-van, work truck or van, etc. If a car is at high risk of being stolen, you might notice higher quotes when doing a car insurance comparison. High theft risk for cars do vary from state to state, so you'll need to find out which are at high risk in your state. For example, the state of Texas has the 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup at the top of its "Most Stolen Vehicles" list. The 2000 Honda Civic is number five on the list! In North Carolina, however, the 1996 Honda Accord made top of the list. So if you're considering a certain type of car, van or truck, you can check the "Most Stolen List" in your state and find out if this is making a difference on your auto insurance rates.
Auto insurance comparisons shouldn't be the only determining factor for buying a car, but you should definitely consider this as part of your research. Don't buy the first car you see...take time to learn all the facts about several vehicles so you can make a wise choice for the future.
